Estimates for planning, not tax advice. Your employer's payroll may round differently, and your tax bill when you file can differ from what's withheld.
How Arizona taxes your paycheck in 2026
Arizona taxes income at a flat 2.5%. Employers withhold a percentage of your taxable wages that you choose on Form A-4, from 0.5% to 3.5%; if you never filed one, they withhold 2.0%, which is what this calculator shows. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not subject to Arizona withholding. There are no employee-paid state payroll taxes and no local income taxes.
Income tax rate: 2% of taxable wages.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Arizona taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Arizona cities and counties do not tax wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- Arizona withholding is a percentage of your wages that you choose on Form A-4: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% or 3.5% (or zero if you expect to owe no Arizona tax). The calculator uses 2.0%, the rate employers must use when no Form A-4 is on file. If you picked a different percentage, your withholding is that percentage of the same wages.
- This is withholding, not your Arizona tax. The tax is a flat 2.5% of Arizona taxable income, after Arizona's standard deduction and less credits such as the dependent tax credit, so for many people the 2.0% withheld is more or less than what they owe.
- "Gross taxable wages" are federal Form W-2 box 1 wages, so traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not subject to Arizona withholding.
