How Oregon taxes your paycheck in 2026
Oregon's 2026 withholding formula charges 4.75% to 9.9% after a small standard deduction ($2,910 single, $5,820 married) and after subtracting up to $8,750 of the federal income tax withheld, then takes $263 off for each allowance. Employees also pay 0.6% of wages for Paid Leave Oregon and a 0.1% statewide transit tax. Portland-area residents with high incomes owe local income taxes as well.

- Exemption credits off the tax: $263 for you, $263 for a spouse, $263 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Oregon taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.

| Oregon Statewide Transit Tax | 0.1% | No limit |
City and county taxes
Residents of the Portland metro area pay the Metro Supportive Housing Services tax: 1% of Oregon taxable income over $128,000 ($205,000 joint) in 2026. Multnomah County residents also pay the Preschool for All tax: 1.5% of income over $125,000 ($200,000 joint), plus another 1.5% over $250,000 ($400,000 joint). Employers withhold both for employees earning over $200,000, and for others who ask. These apply only to high incomes and are not included here. Some employers also pay TriMet or Lane Transit payroll taxes, but those are not deducted from your pay.
What this calculator simplifies
- Oregon subtracts the federal income tax withheld from your pay, up to $8,750 a year, before applying its rates. That limit drops by $1,750 at $125,000 of wages and at every $5,000 after, reaching zero at $145,000 (married: at $250,000 and every $10,000 after, reaching zero at $290,000); the calculator uses the federal withholding it works out for the same paycheck.
- Oregon's formula adds $263 to the tax below $50,000 of yearly wages, drops allowances above $100,000 of wages ($200,000 married), and withholds for single people claiming 3 or more allowances at married rates. The calculator follows all of these.
- Allowances: we assume 1 for you, 1 more for a spouse if married, and 1 per dependent ($263 off the tax each). Your Form OR-W-4 may claim a different number.
- If the formula comes out below zero, nothing is withheld.
- Oregon's formula booklet still shows some 2025 figures in its worked example and FAQ ($256 credit, $8,500 cap). We use the 2026 amounts from its formula tables ($263, $8,750).
- Statewide transit tax: charged on wages as Oregon defines them for income tax withholding. We charge it on wages after pre-tax health premiums only. If 401(k) contributions are also left out, as for income tax withholding, we overstate it by 0.1% of your 401(k) contribution (at most about $25 a year).
- Paid Leave Oregon: wages exclude pre-tax health premiums and HSA/FSA contributions. We assume 401(k) contributions count as wages, as they do for unemployment insurance, but we couldn't confirm this in Paid Leave Oregon's own guidance.
- The Portland Metro Supportive Housing Services and Multnomah County Preschool for All income taxes are not included.
