How Nebraska taxes your paycheck in 2026
Nebraska withholds income tax at rates from 2.26% to 4.60% for 2026. Withholding subtracts $2,440 for each allowance on Form W-4N, and the first $3,430 ($8,190 married) of what remains is not taxed. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed, because Nebraska taxable wages equal federal taxable wages. There are no employee-paid state payroll taxes and no local income taxes.

- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Nebraska taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Nebraska cities and counties do not tax wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form W-4N claims allowances for a one-earner household: 2 if single (yourself plus "one job"), 3 if married (spouse not working), 3 for head of household, plus 1 per dependent. Two-earner couples are told to claim fewer, which withholds more.
- Head of household uses the single table with an extra allowance, as W-4N does.
- Nebraska's minimum-withholding rule is not applied: if the formula gives less than 1.5% of wages, employers must withhold at least 50% of what a single employee with 1 allowance (or married with 2) would have withheld. It only matters for people claiming many allowances.
- The withholding tables top out at 4.60%; the 2026 income tax rates in Nebraska law differ slightly, so your year-end tax can differ a little. Nebraska's credits (for example the personal exemption credit on the return) are not reflected.
