How Washington taxes your paycheck in 2026
Washington has no income tax on wages. Two state premiums come out of most paychecks: Paid Family & Medical Leave (about 0.81% of gross wages in 2026, up to $184,500 of wages) and the WA Cares long-term care fund (0.58% of all gross wages). Washington's capital gains tax does not affect paychecks.
Washington payroll contributions
| Contribution | Rate | Wages up to |
|---|---|---|
| WA Paid Family & Medical Leave | 0.8072% | $184,500 |
| WA Cares Fund | 0.58% | No limit |
City and county taxes
Washington cities and counties do not tax wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- Paid Leave and WA Cares premiums are charged on gross wages as the Employment Security Department defines them (salary or hourly pay, bonuses, commissions, paid time off), before pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums. Tips are not included.
- The Paid Leave employee share shown is the maximum an employer may withhold. Some employers pay part or all of it for their staff.
- The Social Security cap for Paid Leave applies per employer; if you change jobs mid-year you may pay on more than $184,500 in total.
- Most employers may also deduct a small per-hour amount for the worker's share of Labor & Industries workers' compensation premiums (up to half of the Medical Aid Fund portion). It depends on the job's risk class and hours worked, so it is not included here.
- Washington has no income tax on wages. Its capital gains tax applies only to large investment gains and does not affect paychecks.
