How New York taxes your paycheck in 2026
New York's 2026 withholding starts at 3.9% of wages after a $7,400 deduction ($7,950 married) and $1,000 per allowance, and it takes back the benefit of the lower rates as income rises. Employees also pay up to $0.60 a week for disability insurance and 0.432% of pay (up to $411.91 in 2026) for Paid Family Leave. New York City and Yonkers residents pay local income tax on top.

- Exemptions: $1,000 for you, $1,000 for a spouse, $1,000 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your New York taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.

City and county taxes
New York City residents pay city income tax on top of state tax, withheld with it; the 2026 city withholding rates run from 2.05% to 4.25%. Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their New York State tax. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a 0.5% nonresident earnings tax instead, which this calculator does not apply.
What this calculator simplifies
- This follows New York's 2026 employer withholding tables, which estimate the year's tax; your return can differ, for example because of credits that withholding ignores.
- Allowances: we assume 1 for you, 1 more for a spouse if married, and 1 per dependent ($1,000 each). Your Form IT-2104 worksheet may give a different number.
- Head of household is withheld as single, as Form IT-2104 does.
- High earners: New York takes back the benefit of its lower brackets from people with high incomes. The withholding tables build that into the bracket rates, which is why some rates are higher than the bracket above them.
- Very high earners: once your yearly wages after the deduction and exemptions reach $1,077,550 ($2,155,350 married), New York withholds one flat rate on all of them: 10.45%, 11.10% from $5 million and 11.70% from $25 million. The calculator does the same.
- The calculator matches New York's official annual rate schedule to within about $4 a year; the state's published totals were worked out with unrounded rates.
- New York City uses a smaller deduction than the state ($5,000 single, $5,500 married, versus $7,400 and $7,950), with the same $1,000 per exemption, and the calculator figures city tax on that basis. NYC rates are the same for every filing status.
- Yonkers: 16.75% of the New York State tax worked out here.
- Bonuses paid separately can be withheld at the flat supplemental rates (11.70% state, 4.25% New York City). We treat all pay as regular wages.
- New York disability insurance is capped at $0.60 a week, and some employers pay it themselves. Paid Family Leave stops at $411.91 for the year.
- Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are taken out before New York taxes your wages. We assume an ordinary private-sector plan: public-employee 414(h) contributions are added back for New York and are not covered here.
