How District of Columbia taxes your paycheck in 2026
The District of Columbia taxes income at seven rates from 4% to 10.75%, with 8.5% applying to taxable income from $60,000 to $250,000. This estimate subtracts DC's standard deduction ($15,000 single, $30,000 married filing jointly, $22,500 head of household) from wages. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. Only DC residents pay; there are no employee-paid payroll taxes for paid leave or disability.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $10,000 | 4% |
| $10,000 to $40,000 | 6% |
| $40,000 to $60,000 | 6.5% |
| $60,000 to $250,000 | 8.5% |
| $250,000 to $500,000 | 9.25% |
| $500,000 to $1,000,000 | 9.75% |
| Over $1,000,000 | 10.75% |
- Standard deduction: $15,000 single or married filing separately; $30,000 married filing jointly; $22,500 head of household.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your District of Columbia taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
The District is a single taxing jurisdiction; there is no separate local income tax. DC's Paid Family Leave program is paid entirely by employers, so nothing is deducted from your paycheck for it.
What this calculator simplifies
- DC's Office of Tax and Revenue currently publishes no withholding formula or tables (its withholding tables page has been withdrawn and Form D-4 is under review), so this uses the tax on the return: DC's 2026 rates on wages less the standard deduction. Your employer's DC withholding, based on the allowances on your Form D-4, may differ.
- Uses DC's 2025 standard deduction ($15,000 single, $30,000 married filing jointly, $22,500 head of household). DC set its own amounts starting in 2025 rather than following the larger federal standard deduction; 2026 amounts had not been published when this was written.
- Dependents do not reduce DC tax here; DC has no dependent exemption. DC credits such as the DC earned income tax credit and the property tax credit (Schedule H) are not included.
- Only for DC residents. People who live in Maryland or Virginia and work in DC pay no DC income tax; their home state taxes those wages.
