How Maine taxes your paycheck in 2026
Maine withholds income tax at 5.8%, 6.75% and 7.15% for 2026, after $5,300 for each allowance you claim on Form W-4ME and a standard deduction of $12,850 ($28,550 married) that shrinks at higher incomes. A new 2% surcharge applies to income over $1 million ($1.5 million married). Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. Employers may also deduct up to 0.5% of wages for Maine Paid Family and Medical Leave.

What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form W-4ME claims 1 allowance for you, 1 for your spouse when married filing jointly (assuming your spouse does not also claim it), and 1 per child or other dependent, at $5,300 each.
- The standard deduction shrinks to nothing between $102,250 and $177,250 of yearly wages ($204,550 and $354,550 married), and the calculator applies that phase-out.
- Head of household is withheld on the single schedule with the single deduction, as Form W-4ME directs. Maine's return gives heads of household a larger standard deduction and wider brackets.
- The 2% surcharge on income over $1,000,000 ($1,500,000 married) is applied to income after allowances and the standard deduction, as Maine's withholding method does.
- Paid Family and Medical Leave is shown at the 0.5% most an employee can be charged, on wages after pre-tax health premiums (Maine figures it like unemployment wages, which leave out those premiums but include 401(k) contributions).
- Maine's withholding schedule states the tax at each bracket as a rounded whole-dollar amount; the calculator's figure can differ from it by under a dollar a year.
- This is withholding, not your final Maine tax. Credits such as the property tax fairness and sales tax fairness credits are not reflected.
