How Hawaii taxes your paycheck in 2026
Hawaii withholds income tax on a graduated scale from 1.4% to 7.9% for 2026, after $1,144 for each allowance you claim on Form HW-4 and a $4,350 allowance every employee gets. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. Employers may also deduct Temporary Disability Insurance of 0.5% of wages, at most $7.50 a week. Hawaii has no local income taxes.

What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form HW-4 claims 2 allowances if you are single (yourself, plus one for being single with only one job), 3 if married (yourself, one for having one job with a spouse who does not work, and your spouse), 1 more for head of household, and 1 per dependent, at $1,144 each. Allowances for age 65+, estimated credits or itemized deductions are not included.
- The withholding rates top out at 7.90%. Hawaii's actual 2026 income tax brackets are different and reach 11%, so your return can differ from what is withheld, especially at high incomes.
- Hawaii's withholding booklet states the tax at each bracket as a rounded whole-dollar amount; the calculator's figure can differ from it by under a dollar a year.
- TDI is shown as the most an employer may deduct: 0.5% of weekly wages, up to $7.50 a week, charged on gross wages. We couldn't confirm whether pre-tax health premiums lower TDI wages (with the $7.50 cap the difference is at most a few dollars a year). Hawaii's Prepaid Health Care employee share (up to 1.5% of wages, toward health insurance) is not counted as a tax.
- This is withholding, not your final Hawaii tax. Credits such as the refundable food/excise tax credit are not reflected.
