How Illinois taxes your paycheck in 2026
Illinois taxes wages at a flat 4.95% for 2026, after $2,925 for each allowance you claim on Form IL-W-4 (yourself, your spouse and each dependent). Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. There are no employee-paid state payroll taxes and no local income taxes.
Income tax rate: 4.95% of taxable wages.
- Exemptions: $2,925 for you, $2,925 for a spouse, $2,925 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Illinois taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Illinois cities and counties do not tax wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form IL-W-4 line 1 claims 1 allowance for you, 1 for your spouse when married (assuming your spouse does not claim themselves on their own IL-W-4), and 1 per dependent, at $2,925 each. The extra $1,000 line 2 allowances for age 65+ or blindness are not included.
- On the Illinois return the exemption allowance is not allowed above $250,000 of income ($500,000 married filing jointly). Withholding does not apply that limit, so high earners may owe more than is withheld.
- This is withholding, not your final Illinois tax. Credits such as the property tax credit and the earned income credit are not reflected.
