How Ohio taxes your paycheck in 2026
Ohio cut its income tax rate for 2026, and new withholding tables took effect on August 1, 2026: 1.6% of wages up to $26,050, 2.99% up to $100,000 and 3.4% above, after $650 for each exemption. Most Ohio cities also tax wages, and some school districts do too.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $26,050 | 1.6% |
| $26,050 to $100,000 | 2.99% |
| Over $100,000 | 3.4% |
- Exemptions: $650 for you, $650 for a spouse, $650 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Ohio taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Most Ohio cities and villages tax wages, usually at 1% to 2.5%, and employers withhold the tax for the city where you work. If you live in a different city, it may charge more, with credit for tax paid where you work. Rates here are for residents: Columbus 2.5%, Cleveland 2.5%, Cincinnati 1.8%. Many school districts also charge an income tax, which your employer withholds if you tell them your school district. Look up your address with the Ohio Department of Taxation's "The Finder".
What this calculator simplifies
- Ohio changed its withholding tables on August 1, 2026, for the 2026 rate cut. We use the new tables (1.6% / 2.99% / 3.4%), which apply to paychecks now. From January to July 2026 employers used the October 2025 tables: 1.775% up to $26,050, 2.99% to $100,000 and 3.64% above, with the same $650 exemptions, so total 2026 withholding is a little higher than a full year at the new rates (about $27 more for a single person earning $50,000).
- Ohio's withholding tables take some tax from every dollar of wages. The tax on your Ohio return (a flat 2.75% on income over $26,050 for 2026, under House Bill 96) works differently, so your refund or balance due can differ from what was withheld.
- Exemptions: we assume 1 for you, 1 for a spouse if married, and 1 per dependent, as Form IT 4 allows ($650 each).
- City income taxes are charged on wages before 401(k) contributions but after pre-tax health premiums (Medicare wages), which is how the calculator figures them.
- City taxes: we show the resident rate and assume you live and work in the same city. Credit rules for working in one city and living in another vary by city.
- School district income taxes are not included.
