How Vermont taxes your paycheck in 2026
Vermont withholds income tax at 3.35%, 6.6%, 7.6% and 8.75% on wages above a tax-free band ($3,925 single, $11,775 married), after $5,400 for each withholding allowance. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. Your employer may also deduct up to 0.11% of wages toward the state Child Care Contribution. Vermont has no local income taxes.

What this calculator simplifies
- We assume the W-4VT worksheet: 1 allowance if single, 2 if married (assuming your spouse does not work), plus 1 per dependent, at $5,400 each. A married employee whose spouse works claims one fewer (about $180 to $360 a year more tax).
- Heads of household use the single table, as W-4VT has no head-of-household status, but its worksheet gives them one extra allowance (line 4, $5,400) that the calculator does not add, so their withholding is about $181 a year too high at the 3.35% rate.
- The 0.11% Child Care Contribution is only taken from your pay if your employer chooses to withhold it (any amount up to 0.11%, or nothing). It is charged on federal income-tax wages, which leave out 401(k) contributions; the calculator charges it before 401(k) contributions, so it is overstated by 0.11% of what you put in a 401(k).
- This is withholding, not your final Vermont tax. The Vermont return uses its own standard deduction, personal exemptions and credits, so the refund or balance due can differ.
