How Mississippi taxes your paycheck in 2026
Mississippi taxes wages at 4.0% for 2026, with the first $10,000 of taxable income not taxed. Withholding subtracts a personal exemption ($6,000 single, $8,000 head of family, $12,000 married, plus $1,500 per dependent) and a standard deduction ($2,300 single, $3,400 head of family, $4,600 married). There are no employee-paid state payroll taxes and no local income taxes.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $10,000 | 0% |
| Over $10,000 | 4% |
- Standard deduction: $2,300 single or married filing separately; $4,600 married filing jointly; $5,400 head of household.
- Exemptions: $6,000 for you, $6,000 for a spouse, $1,500 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Mississippi taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Mississippi cities and counties do not tax wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- Married uses the "spouse not employed" table: $12,000 exemption and $4,600 standard deduction. When both spouses work, Mississippi splits the exemption between the two jobs and each uses a $2,300 standard deduction, so each paycheck has a little more withheld.
- Head of family gets an $8,000 exemption plus $1,500 per dependent (the $9,500 in the state's tables already includes one dependent) and a $3,400 standard deduction.
- Exemptions for age 65 and blindness ($1,500 each) are not included.
- We assume 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed, as for federal tax. The state's guide says Mississippi withholding "follow[s] very closely" the federal rules, but we couldn't confirm that it covers them directly.
- This is withholding, not your final tax.
