How Minnesota taxes your paycheck in 2026
Minnesota taxes wages at four rates for 2026: 5.35%, 6.80%, 7.85% and 9.85%. Withholding subtracts $5,300 for each allowance on Form W-4MN, and the first $4,700 ($14,700 married) of what remains is not taxed. Starting in 2026, employees also pay up to 0.44% of wages, up to about $185,000, for Minnesota Paid Leave. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not subject to income tax, and there are no local income taxes.

What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form W-4MN claims allowances for a one-earner household: 2 if single (yourself plus "one job"), 3 if married (spouse not working), 3 for head of household, plus 1 per dependent. If your spouse works or you have two jobs, the form tells you to claim fewer, and withholding is higher.
- Head of household uses the single chart with an extra allowance, as W-4MN does.
- Paid Leave wage cap: one part of Minnesota law rounds the Social Security wage base ($184,500 for 2026) to the nearest $1,000, giving $185,000, while another states it without rounding. The difference is at most $2.20 a year.
- Paid Leave is shown at the most an employee can be charged (0.44%); your employer may pay more of it.
- This is withholding, not your final tax: Minnesota's child tax credit, working family credit and other return items are not reflected.
