Estimates for planning, not tax advice. Your employer's payroll may round differently, and your tax bill when you file can differ from what's withheld.
How Utah taxes your paycheck in 2026
Utah taxes wages at a flat 4.45% in 2026, reduced by a small credit ($485 a year single, $970 married) that phases out by 1.3 cents per dollar of wages above $9,348 (single) or $18,696 (married). Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. Utah has no employee-paid state payroll taxes and no local income taxes.
Income tax rate: 4.45% of taxable wages.
- Exemption credits off the tax: $485 for you, $485 for a spouse.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Utah taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Utah has no city or county income taxes on wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- Head of household uses the single schedule, as Utah's withholding guide directs. Utah's withholding ignores dependents and W-4 allowances entirely, so dependents do not change withholding here.
- Utah taxable wages are wages subject to federal income tax withholding, so traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are left out.
- Utah's withholding tables round each line to whole dollars per pay period; the calculator works out the yearly figure without rounding, so a paycheck can differ from an employer's by a dollar or so.
- The 4.45% rate took effect in withholding for pay periods starting June 1, 2026. Paychecks before then used the earlier tables (built on the previous 4.5% rate), but S.B. 60 makes 4.45% the rate for the whole 2026 tax year, so the calculator uses it all year.
- This is withholding, not your final Utah tax. The return's taxpayer tax credit counts dependents and phases out differently, so the refund or balance due can differ.
