How Indiana taxes your paycheck in 2026
Indiana taxes wages at a flat 2.95% for 2026, plus a county income tax of 0.5% to 3% depending on the county you live in. Both are figured after $1,000 for each exemption you claim on Form WH-4 and an extra $1,500 for each dependent child. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. There are no employee-paid state payroll taxes.
Income tax rate: 2.95% of taxable wages.
- Exemptions: $1,000 for you, $1,000 for a spouse, $2,500 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Indiana taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Every Indiana county taxes income, and employers withhold it with state tax. The rate is set by the county you lived in on January 1, 2026 (or, if you lived outside Indiana that day, the Indiana county where you mainly worked). For 2026 the rates run from 0.5% (Porter) to 3.0% (Randolph); Marion County (Indianapolis) is 2.02%. County tax is figured on the same amount as state tax, after your WH-4 exemptions.
What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form WH-4 claims $1,000 for you, $1,000 for your spouse when married (assuming your spouse does not claim themselves on their own WH-4), and $2,500 per dependent ($1,000 plus the $1,500 additional exemption for a dependent child under 19, or under 24 and a full-time student). Dependents who are not such children get only $1,000, and the extra exemptions for age 65+ or blindness, the first-time dependent exemption and the $3,000 adopted-child exemption are not included.
- County rates are from the Department of Revenue's notice effective January 1, 2026. PayrollOrg reported that Boone County's rate rose from 1.7% to 1.71% on October 1, 2026, but we couldn't confirm it: the state's own notice still showed the January rates when checked on October 16, 2026, so Boone is listed at 1.7%.
- This is withholding, not your final Indiana tax. Credits and deductions on the Indiana return (such as the renter's deduction) are not reflected.
