How Maryland taxes your paycheck in 2026

Maryland withholds state income tax at 4.75% on taxable wages up to $100,000 ($150,000 joint or head of household), rising in steps to 6.5% above $1 million ($1.2 million joint). Withholding first subtracts a $3,400 standard deduction and $3,200 for each exemption you claim. Every resident also pays a county or Baltimore City income tax of 2.25% to 3.30% on the same taxable income. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed, and the state paid leave (FAMLI) deduction does not begin until 2027.

City and county taxes

Every Maryland resident also pays a county (or Baltimore City) income tax on the same taxable income as the state tax, at 2.25% to 3.30% for 2026. Pick the county you live in on December 31. Anne Arundel and Frederick counties use income-based rates; Allegany (3.20%) and Kent (3.30%) changed for 2026. Nonresidents who work in Maryland pay no county tax but have an extra 2.25% state tax withheld instead.
