How Michigan taxes your paycheck in 2026
Michigan taxes wages at a flat 4.25% in 2026. Withholding first subtracts $5,900 for each exemption you claim on Form MI-W4: yourself, your spouse and each dependent. Twenty-four cities, including Detroit (2.4%) and Grand Rapids (1.5%), also tax the wages of residents and of people who work there. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not subject to state tax, and there are no employee-paid state payroll taxes.
Income tax rate: 4.25% of taxable wages.
- Exemptions: $5,900 for you, $5,900 for a spouse, $5,900 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Michigan taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Twenty-four Michigan cities tax income. Residents pay the resident rate on all their wages, wherever they work: 2.4% in Detroit, 2% in Highland Park, 1.5% in Grand Rapids and Saginaw, and 1% in the other cities (Albion, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Big Rapids, East Lansing, Flint, Grayling, Hamtramck, Hudson, Ionia, Jackson, Lansing, Lapeer, Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Pontiac, Port Huron, Portland, Springfield and Walker). People who work in one of these cities but live elsewhere pay half the resident rate (1.2% in Detroit) on wages earned there. Each city first subtracts a personal exemption, usually $600 per person.
What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form MI-W4 claims one exemption for you, one for your spouse when married, and one per dependent, $5,900 each. Michigan's special exemptions (for example for a disability) are not included.
- City tax is figured at the resident rate. Nonresidents who work in a taxing city pay half the resident rate, only on wages earned there; choose your city only if you live there, or treat the result as an upper limit.
- City tax is figured on your W-2 box 1 wages, after traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums, as Michigan's City Income Tax Act and the cities' own instructions direct.
- City exemptions ($600 in most cities; $700 Ionia; $750 Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Saginaw, Springfield; $1,000 Hudson, Portland) are subtracted for you, your spouse when married, and one dependent for head of household. Other dependents' city exemptions are not, so city tax is a little too high for each of them (about $6 to $14 a year per dependent).
- City figures come from each city's 2025 returns and guides (Detroit's 2026 guide; some 2026 estimate forms); no city announced a change for 2026. We couldn't confirm Grayling's, Ionia's, Jackson's or Muskegon Heights' rates from a city document, so they use the standard 1% resident rate set by Michigan's Uniform City Income Tax Ordinance; Portland's $1,000 and Saginaw's $750 exemptions rest on older or partial city documents.
- If you live in one taxing city and work in another, the work city's nonresident tax is withheld and you get credit for it at home (Detroit withholds 2.4% minus the other city's nonresident rate). The calculator does not split it this way, but the total is about the same.
- This is withholding, not your final tax: Michigan's homestead property tax credit, earned income tax credit and other credits are not reflected.
