How Missouri taxes your paycheck in 2026

Missouri taxes wages at rates from 2% up to 4.7%, with the top rate reached at just $9,436 of taxable income in 2026. Withholding first subtracts the federal standard deduction for your filing status ($16,100 single, $32,200 married with one earner, $24,150 head of household). Residents of Kansas City and St. Louis, and people who work there, also pay a 1% city earnings tax. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not subject to state income tax, and there are no employee-paid state payroll taxes.

City and county taxes

Kansas City and the City of St. Louis each charge a 1% earnings tax on residents (wherever they work) and on nonresidents for work done in the city. Employers in the city withhold it; residents who work elsewhere may have to file and pay it themselves. Voters in both cities renewed the tax in April 2026 for another five years. Other Missouri cities and counties do not tax wages.
