What this calculator simplifies
- This follows New Jersey's withholding tables (Rate A for single or married filing separately, Rate B for married filing jointly and head of household), which estimate the year's tax. Your return can differ.
- Allowances: we assume 1 for you, 1 more for a spouse if married, and 1 per dependent ($1,000 each). Form NJ-W4 has no worksheet. If no allowances are entered on line 4, the employer withholds with none.
- Married couples who both work, or people with more than one job, may pick a different rate table (C, D or E) on Form NJ-W4. We use the default Rate A or B.
- Only 401(k) contributions are pre-tax for New Jersey. 403(b), 457 and other retirement contributions are taxed in New Jersey, and this calculator treats every retirement contribution as a 401(k).
- We treat health premiums paid through a cafeteria plan as pre-tax, as New Jersey's withholding guide does for plans that require the money to buy coverage such as medical insurance. New Jersey does not follow the federal rules for health savings accounts (HSAs), so HSA payroll contributions are taxable in New Jersey; this calculator does not separate them out.
- Unemployment, disability and family leave contributions are charged on wages before 401(k) and pre-tax health deductions (the NJ Department of Labor counts amounts you could have taken as cash as wages).
