What this calculator simplifies
- North Carolina's 2026 tax rate is 3.99%, but employers withhold 4.09%. We show the 4.09% that comes out of your paycheck, so most people get a little back at tax time.
- Married people are withheld with the same $12,750 standard deduction as single people, so a married couple's withholding is usually higher than their joint tax. That is how the North Carolina tables work.
- Allowances: we assume none. Form NC-4 EZ gives $2,500 allowances only for children under 17, and only up to income limits ($70,000 single, $140,000 married filing jointly, $105,000 head of household, with fewer allowances as income rises). Other allowances need the full NC-4. With children and income under those limits, your real withholding is about $102 a year lower per allowance.
- 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums come out before North Carolina tax, because the state follows federal wages.
