How North Dakota taxes your paycheck in 2026
North Dakota's 2026 withholding takes nothing from roughly the first $57,600 of a single person's yearly wages ($78,475 for head of household). Above that it withholds 1.95%, rising to 2.5% on high incomes. There are no local income taxes and no employee payroll taxes beyond federal ones.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $57,625 | 0% |
| $57,625 to $258,450 | 1.95% |
| Over $258,450 | 2.5% |
| Taxable income | Rate |

- A traditional 401(k) lowers your North Dakota taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.

What this calculator simplifies
- This follows North Dakota's 2026 withholding tables for 2020-and-later federal W-4s, which use filing status only. Dependents and other W-4 entries do not change North Dakota withholding.
- Below the tables' starting points ($57,625 single, $57,500 married, $78,475 head of household) nothing is withheld.
- The married table withholds at 1.95% only up to $168,525 of wages, while the single table goes to $258,450. The calculator follows the published tables as they are.
- The worked example on page 45 of the 2026 booklet ($1,800 a week, single, $734 a year) does not match its own 2026 table, which gives $701.51 (the wage-bracket table gives $14 a week); it looks carried over from 2025. We follow the table.
- Employees with an older (pre-2020) W-4 are withheld under a different method with $5,050 allowances, which the calculator does not cover.
- 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums come out before North Dakota tax, because the state starts from federal taxable income.
