How Rhode Island taxes your paycheck in 2026
Rhode Island withholds income tax at 3.75%, 4.75% and 5.99%, using one table for every filing status, after $1,000 for each exemption (none once wages pass $290,800). Employees also pay 1.1% of their first $100,000 of wages for temporary disability and caregiver insurance (TDI).
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $82,050 | 3.75% |
| $82,050 to $186,450 | 4.75% |
| Over $186,450 | 5.99% |
- Exemptions: $1,000 for you, $1,000 for a spouse, $1,000 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Rhode Island taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
Rhode Island payroll contributions
| Contribution | Rate | Wages up to |

What this calculator simplifies
- This follows Rhode Island's 2026 withholding tables, which use one table for every filing status and estimate the year's tax. Your return can differ, for example because of Rhode Island's standard deduction, which the tables do not use.
- Exemptions: we assume 1 for you, 1 more for a spouse if married, and 1 per dependent ($1,000 each). Your Form RI W-4 may claim a different number.
- TDI: we charge it on wages after pre-tax health premiums and before 401(k) contributions, as for Social Security. We couldn't confirm in the Department of Labor and Training's guidance that those premiums are left out of TDI wages; the difference is 1.1% of those premiums.
- 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums come out before Rhode Island income tax, because Rhode Island starts from federal adjusted gross income.
