How Virginia taxes your paycheck in 2026
Virginia withholds income tax at 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable wages, 3% to $5,000, 5% to $17,000 and 5.75% above that, after an $8,750 standard deduction and $930 for each exemption you claim on Form VA-4. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not taxed. There are no employee-paid state payroll taxes in 2026 and no local income taxes.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $3,000 | 2% |
| $3,000 to $5,000 | 3% |
| $5,000 to $17,000 | 5% |
| Over $17,000 | 5.75% |
- Standard deduction: $8,750 single or married filing separately; $8,750 married filing jointly; $8,750 head of household.
- Exemptions: $930 for you, $930 for a spouse, $930 per dependent.
- A traditional 401(k) lowers your Virginia taxable wages; pre-tax health premiums do.
City and county taxes
Virginia cities and counties do not tax wages.
What this calculator simplifies
- We assume Form VA-4 claims 1 exemption for you, 1 for a spouse when married (assuming your spouse does not claim themselves on their own VA-4), and 1 per dependent, at $930 each. The extra $800 exemptions for age 65+ or blindness are not included.
- Virginia's withholding formula subtracts the single $8,750 standard deduction for everyone, including married employees, so it does not split the $17,500 joint-return deduction between spouses. Your actual Virginia return may give a different result.
- Virginia's 2026 law creates a paid family and medical leave program, but payroll contributions do not begin until April 1, 2028, so nothing is deducted in 2026.
- This is withholding, not your final Virginia tax. Credits such as the low-income credit and the earned income credit are not reflected.
